Brief Bio:

Dr. Erin Buhr is a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta. Prior to becoming a psychologist, she worked in community group homes with youth. She later obtained her master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University in BC and then completed a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, where her research focused on motivation. Throughout Dr. Buhr’s work and training, she was exposed to many types of clients and modalities, and as a result, works in a few different areas of counselling and assessment. In counselling, Dr. Buhr primarily uses a “firm but fair” style that incorporates cognitive, emotion-focused, mindfulness, and person-centred theories to help people confront their problems to make important changes in their life.

One area Dr. Buhr works in is providing counselling to adults, particularly those experiencing trauma. Currently Dr. Buhr works with first responders such as paramedics, corrections officers, and police officers, and others who have experienced a single-incident trauma. In this work, she combines Judith Herman’s three stage model with prolonged exposure therapy. Dr. Buhr also works with adults in other capacities, such as general stress management, self-esteem, and resolving anger.

Dr. Buhr works in high conflict divorce, specifically with PN7s. She works with separated couples, teens, and children who are experiencing problems related to conflict over co-parenting. With adults she utilizes Family Restructuring Therapy and with children and teens, Dr. Buhr utilizes play therapy, cognitive therapy, and emotion-focused therapy. Dr. Buhr also conducts Voice of the Child interventions and reunification therapy.

Dr. Buhr has training in play therapy, and works with children with anxiety, depression, and those who are experiencing family discord using an integrative therapy model.

In assessment, Dr. Buhr provides psycho-educational assessments for children to test for learning disorders, attention-related problems, and other behavioural issues. She can provide similar testing for adults, and also engages in psychological testing to determine the presence of various disorders.
